I know a woman...

I know a woman
who walks on tiptoes,
and quietly chases adventure-
along with me
kindness and grace
open to any
idea or question
willing to love,
seek peace,
work for justice.

I know a woman
who’s been by my side
with each passing year-
my defender,
wild and free-
talking so fast
no one can quite keep up;
with her interests so unique
not one human
could ever be-
just like her.

I know a woman
who raised two bold
and brave women;
she is filled to the brim
with grace and peace
so much so
that it easily
overflows
swirling and falling
without question
onto others.

I know a woman
full of sparkle and sass
headband neatly placed
stronger and
much more gorgeous
than she thinks
she is
heart open
and searching
for the greatest
adventure.

I know two women
who remind me of
one another;
fearless mothers
the ones I will call
when it’s my turn,
dark hair falling
in waves
past strong shoulders;
feet pounding pavement
so quickly and loudly
I struggle to keep up;
their brilliance and boldness
shining
in each thing they do.

I know a woman
whose pen is her sword
all the various colors
of pen, she carries;
her handwriting free
and flowing
her thoughts
the most provoking
and enlivening
making me think
making me wonder
making me question
and all at once,
making me certain.

I know a woman
unique in every way-
a whirlwind of color;
one can never predict-
what she will do
next,
yet,
she is usually found
walking slowly and
searching for the next
butterfly.

I know a woman
golden hair
dancing in the sun
praising and
laughing with
each playful step
taking on the next
challenge,
unwilling to give
up.

I know a woman
full of endless energy-
always willing to extend a hand,
the most brilliant eyes
framed by the cutest glasses
full of spark and a dash of whimsy
those exact same eyes
used to stare back at me
from her miniature in class.

I know a woman
organized and planned
down to the neatest
handwriting
one might ever see,
the one I can depend on
to be there-
each and every time
I might need her.

I know a woman
towering above
with loud laughter
and lots of enthusiasm
running
walking
rushing
doing ALL the things
caring for others,
so selflessly.

I know a woman
three matching daughters in tow-
floats as she walks,
noticing and finding curiosities
writing and speaking with power and grace
inspiring in others
the desire to be-
something just a little like her.

I was reflecting recently on the women I know, the friendships I have. Each one is so beautifully unique, bold, and brave. These words came to mind. I am blessed to truly know them. -R
